Australia Ranks High with Biotech

AUSTRALIA is ranked sixth in the world for the number of biotechnology firms but is way down the ladder in terms of spending on research and development, the OECD says.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's directorate for Science, Technology and Industry on Tuesday released statistics updated in December that showed there were 527 biotechnology firms in Australia in 2006.
That places Australia at number six in the world, behind the US (6213), Spain (1715), France (1481), Korea (885) and Germany (678).
The figures are from 2011 or the latest available year.
But the latest available data on the number of firms in Australia was from 2006.
The US figures were from 2009 and Germany's from 2011.
In terms of spending, Australia (with figures from 2010) lags behind when it comes to outlays on research and development.
It was ranked 19 out of 27 in terms of millions of dollars spent.
